New word of the day: pata

Let me just preface this post that the alarm went off at 7am. On vacation. You may now proceed to the rest of the story.

Alarm goes off. We wake up…well some of us wake up. I’m in a half slumber/half awake state of mind. Shower, dress and I get to show Mom how to use Uber because I feel this is an important skill for anyone to know! Where are we going you ask? Well, today we have tickets for the Frida Khalo museum or CasaAzul. So we stop at a coffee shop called “Pan Gabriel” and Mom comments that she loved him and was sad when he died. She’s talking about Juan Gabriel, the singer (for those that don’t know Spanish music).

We stand in line at the museum and meet a nice girl who traveled from Quebec, Mary Lou. I was tempted to ask her how many times she heard “Mary Lou Who” from the Dr Seuss books…I am a San Diegan after all. I’m standing there holding our tickets and realize the date is for 4 days in the future! Epic fail! Not pointing fingers but I never actually saw the tickets until this morning… so we have 2 options, use our charms to convince them to let us in (honest mistake – we were prepared to play up our “we didn’t know, can’t you just let us in”) or walk out of line. Yeah, we chose to charm them and it didn’t work! Epic fail #2.

We walked Coyoacán since we were already there and stumbled upon a professional photo shoot. So what does one do in that situation?! You follow them and pose where the model was posing – in this case, it was a Quinceañera event. Afterwards, we had lunch at Corazon de Maguey.

This requires its own section.

We sit down and are excited for a really good meal (after yesterday’s blunder). We order our meal and drinks: 2 mezcal drinks with cucumber, lime, mint and club soda plus pumpkin seed salad to share and pork tacos for me. Mom ordered Jamaica tacos. Then a waiter comes back with a free specialty of the house appetizer with mini tostadas and some mixture of onions and something else. I figure, it’s clear, it’s briny, it’s sort of like ceviche….so I try it. Put the toppings on and take a bite. I’m all in. Mom takes a piece too and we both can’t figure out what the “something else” is. So she asks. Then she asks me if I want to know. Curiosity has gotten the best of me and I say “yes” – side note, wish I said “no.” WE ATE RAW COW FEET!!!!!!!! Unknowingly. And now I know a new word – pata. So stay away from pata. I have never been more grateful for our mezcal drinks as I sort of forgot what we ate after a bit.

Post cow-feet, we went to find the haunted alleyway – Callejón del Aguacate. I didn’t really get any weird vibes but I was definitely buzzing on something. We hopped back into the Uber and headed back to the hotel for a brief reprieve. Then, we walked to Templo Mayor and decided we needed to find the hotel bar. Success! We will now be regulars for their Clerico drink. Cheers!!

Please don’t fall Mom. I don’t know how to dial 9-1-1 in Mexico!
