Because if you eat pata, you should try chapulínes

Finally! Our first truly leisurely day. No Uber. No Turibus. Nothing but our own 2 patas to get us from point A to point B. Side note: I started saying “Mamá, mi duelen mis patas” in public and my mother is horrified that someone will think she taught me bad Spanish. Patas should only refer to non-human limbs ¡Jajaja!

Side note #2: the bartender knows me already. He taught me how to order limes for my Corona (tercios?).

Side note #3: our family surname was Corona for some distant relative. Wonder if I should change my name to that.

Back to the regularly scheduled story telling…we awoke to the sound of military drums and saw a whole army of people in uniform raising the flag with such pomp and circumstance. Just last night we wondered who raised the flag as we never saw it go up or come down. The flag ghost must have done it. Now we know!

We took a leisurely stroll to the Palacio de Bellas Artes to admire the building and see what treasures were contained within. The building is so ornate and the roof is yellow, gold, pink colored glass. Once inside, there’s some art pieces you can pay to see, so of course, we went. More Diego Rivera murals and even a Picasso!

If you followed my old blog, you know I have a tendency to stumble upon cool street art. Though this sign was at a torta stand/shop, I liked the message.

After the Palacio, I treated Mom to a fancy lunch. This place was swanky with very attentive wait staff – “Balcón del Zócalo” – and even though it was technically a terrazza, it was loads better than our first tourist mistake on Day 2. This place was so fancy that they served a local delicacy – chapulínes or grasshopper. Yep, they served guacamole with grasshopper. We figured since we already unknowingly ate pata, we could knowingly eat chapulínes and call it a day on adventurous eating. The video is for your amusement. For the record, I gave them enough of a chance.

After lots of drinks to wash down the delicacy, we wandered through the Zócalo and are now at the hotel taking it easy. Mom is napping and me, well I’m making friends at the bar and learning important Spanish words/phrases – like how to order limes for your beer.

Tonight we have to get to sleep early since we’re heading to the pyramids tomorrow with Omar (the guy who gave Mom his phone number). Super excited for what tomorrow brings!

Jai yen yen friends and stay away from chapulínes!
