Canada is an interesting place…Day 1 recap

I’m in this strange land where no one says “eh” [yet], the sun is still out at 9:16pm [yes I clocked it] and worlds collide. Literally. More to come on that….

My flight to Vancouver was pretty uneventful except for the woman seated in an emergency exit row who looked like she was going to hurl or pass out at any moment. And instead of the flight crew moving her, they offered her cold compresses and ice water. Seriously, Canadians are like the nicest people ever.

Was wandering around with a confused look on my face after exiting the Skytrain/metro – yes, this car-driving-freeway-living girl made it close to my destination using public transportation – and a really strange man asked me where I was trying to go. I could tell something was off with him but I figured I was much quicker in thinking and speed if something went awry. He wanted money but I told him I didn’t have any. I gave him my used metro ticket instead. Hope I don’t run into him at the hostel since he knows about this place.

After checking in, and depositing my bag into the only other empty lower bunk bed, I walked to find dinner and naturally made my way to the hostel bar. I took a crossword puzzle because if no one talked to me, I could at least entertain myself. I met a local bartender who traveled by herself to Europe before so she really put my mind at ease that it’s NBD. Oooh, I also tried like 3 different Canadian beers and they are actually pretty good! I booked a walking ghost tour for Wednesday and I’m pretty excited for this kind of history.

Ok, now back to the worlds colliding story. The long/short of it is that who ever comes into the room first gets first pick of the bed they want. I’m in a 4-bed female only room. I gather I’m the 2nd person in the room because there’s someone’s stuff in one of the lower bunk lockers and so I snag the other lower bunk (except I’m smarter…I add paper and water bottles and food on top of my bed so they know it’s claimed). Walk into the room after leaving the bar at 9:16p when the sun is still out and there is an angry looking Asian girl GLARING at the top bunk. There is an Indian girl looking sheepishly and almost side-eyeing as well and she’s in the lower bunk. Very strange thing to witness. What I can gather is that the Asian girl claimed the lower bunk bed and Indian girl stole it from her because there was nothing physically claiming her space. Amateurs. I know better.

Vancouver at “night” which is really just evening because what strange place is this that the sun is still out at 9:16p…
