Hello Brissy…

Yesterday I took a flight from Cairns to Brisbane and still no one checked my ID at the airport. This is a really strange country; in addition to the reasons I listed in my previous blog post, I have a new piece of evidence:

  • I got an Uber from the airport to my hostel at 3:30p on a normal (non-holiday) Saturday afternoon. And we went through a checkpoint where my driver had to blow into a breathalyzer. On a Saturday AFTERNOON. On a NON-HOLIDAY weekend and still no one cares to check my ID at the airport. You do you Australia. You strange.
  • My hostel is more like a hotel with a very young vibe and crowd and offers free beer every night at 8pm. The adult in me wishes it were given at 6pm, but I’m not one to pass up free beer so I prettied up and headed to Birdees (the bar connected to the hostel).
  • I should learn to pass up free beer as it wasn’t very good and wasn’t even cold enough to taste good. So I purchased some on my own and decided to do some dancing in the nightclub part. And you know what, I was dancing alone without a care in the world and did not care one bit what these young kids thought of me.
  • Today I woke up and decided to walk the Stony Bridge. Or Story Bridge. I honestly don’t remember but don’t really care to look it up – you can tell how nonplussed I am with Australia now by my apathy.
  • I got lost trying to find some cliffs called Kangaroo Point so I decided to come back and eat lunch. The food in Australia really reminds me of America so I’m not excited by meals too much. Still can’t force myself to try kangaroo.
  • Speaking of Australian animals, I booked a visit to a koala sanctuary and the guy asked if I had any friends going with me. I told him, “I don’t have any friends but plan on making friends with a koala!” That’s on Tuesday which gives me time to go shopping tomorrow for clothes to keep me warm in New Zealand. Judging by the weather app, I may die of hypothermia there as it’s going to be below 65 degrees most of the days. Should have planned better as I’m more prepared for the beachy weather that awaits me in South and Central America.
