You better Belize it!

I’ve been at the resort for 3 full days now and I haven’t been doing much. And I must admit, it feels really nice. After arriving late Saturday, I borrowed a bike from the resort & headed out on Sunday morning to the grocery store. I am amazed at all the bike-friendly places I’ve been to this year and this is the first time I’ve ridden one. And it’s true what they say, “you don’t forget how to ride a bike.” It’s Central America, so of course, I got a lot of catcalls and whistles while riding around. And it’s an island so everything is mad expensive. I spent $60 USD on sandwich making supplies and have been having salami sandwiches every day I’m here.

The resort is nice. It’s tropical and very beautiful. The restaurant onsite isn’t so nice but at least the options are more American than what I’ve had over the last 6 months.

The resort even comes with it’s own creatures, like my iguana stalker and the gecko that decided to hide underneath my dishwasher. I only noticed him (and yes, any unwanted animal/creature in my unit is a “he”) when I went to get some more coffee this morning. Here’s my iguana. He’s finally scared of me because I chased him away with a yoga mat! True story.

Yesterday (Monday) I only showered to go have lunch at the not-very-good restaurant. The day was cloudy and overcast so I couldn’t even spend time reading at the pool or beach. And today, I borrowed a bike again to ride into town. And I nearly died. True story. I went the wrong way on one of the roads (in my defense, they aren’t very well signed) and someone yelled out at me “you’re going the wrong way.” To which I quickly turned off to a side street and proceeded to make my way back to the resort – 3.5 miles away from the town of San Pedro. I don’t like being out in town alone…still hyper aware of women traveling alone and all that can happen to us – so I bought my postcards and headed back to the safety of my resort. Except I’m not sure how “safe” I am here because it’s apparent I eat alone at the restaurant and I’ve already had a waiter try to talk to me. I don’t like to be rude but I also don’t like to spotlight the fact that I’m very much alone in Belize. Luckily, today’s restaurant staff was cool and I have a feeling they’d look out for me from now on.

And side note, housekeeping knows me so well after 3 days!! They know I like to take naps so they don’t put the decorative pillows on the bed. And I don’t know about you but does anyone else feel weird if they wash your dishes when you’ve put them in the dishwasher to be washed once you’ve accumulated enough to warrant running said dishwasher??! Is this how rich people live??….
