I don’t even know what day it is unless it’s a workday and I’m diligently glued to my laptop screen (just in case my boss ever discovers this travel blog!). Yesterday was Saturday because come Friday “el cuerpo sabe” [translated: “the body knows” it’s Saturday. Cute little saying I’ve heard in Mexico]. But before I tell you about our eventful Saturday, I would be remiss in failing to mention the meteor we happened to see falling over the water on Friday evening.
The Friday workday ended around 2pm for me – don’t worry, I check in on Sunday nights to see what madness awaits my Monday – and I went swimming at the pool. Maye invited us for dinner with her friends and never ones to miss out on a) socializing and b) free rides to anywhere [seriously considering taking the bull by the horns and practicing driving in Mexico] we tagged along. After dinner, we ended up at Maye’s house trying churros-flavored Bailey’s for the first time and enjoying the night sky. All of a sudden, a flash of light went soaring over the water (not an ocean I’m constantly reminded) without a sound. Poof! Just like that it quietly disappeared in the night sky but since 3 of us saw it, I knew it wasn’t the alcohol. “Did you see that?” “Yes!” The next morning we saw on Facebook that people in Los Angeles recorded video of a meteor streaking across the sky. You guys, we saw a freaking meteor!!!!! In our excitement, we never wished upon it but when you’re caught in this little bubble of paradise/bliss, what else could we really need or want?

Saturday started off like any typical vacation day. Waking up with no plans except to hang out at the pool and enjoy the relaxation. People in the condo complex are always running around telling you if whales are passing by and it’s a real treat whether you’ve seen it 1 or 100 times. There is a sense of connection to nature that you experience watching animals do their thing without anyone around to interfere. This day was no exception except the whales passing by were a mom and baby whale. I’m told it was good luck and very rare for me to have captured this picture of double tails and I just think the Universe and I have got a special direct line. Enjoy the photo and video of las ballenas.

Around lunch time, Mom asked if I wanted to head into town that night for some souvenir shopping (yes, you can live somewhere for a month and still want to be a tourist at times). I said “yes” and then made reservations for dinner at Habanero’s restaurant. We called an Uber and were on our way.
We found our souvenirs. Shoutout to my mom who bought me a cute purse made out of straw material (la bolsa) and a little wall hanging art made from the Loteria El Borrarcho (the Drunk) to hang up in my bar area at home. Loteria is a very well known game played in Mexico. It’s like bingo except with pictures (the topless mermaid – La Sirena always embarrassed me as a kid) and we played with uncooked pinto beans as game pieces. I guess we’ve always been a little bit Mexican 😉 So, “gracias Mama por mi bolsa y mi borracho.”
Habanero’s was so good, or “muy rico” as my Mom says when the waiters ask if our meal was any good. We ordered the tuna tartar (Mom tried it for the first time), a salad to share and beef sopes. We also ordered sangria and margaritas to top off our nice meal. The ambience of the restaurant was outstanding. This picture doesn’t even do it justice but it was so lovely.

We returned to the condo full, tired and happy. And then went out to the dark beach to see if we’d be lucky enough to see a meteor 2 nights in a row. We weren’t, but we still feel extremely lucky to call this place our temporary home, even while the world still struggles to fight a global pandemic. Mask up, stay safe Reader.

Awesome!!
