Livin’ like locals as guests of Farmer’s Market royalty

Friday, y el cuerpo lo sabe. We went downtown to grab dinner at Baja Brewing and to try some other types of beer they sell. Mom is determined to like beer after spending a month with her beer-drinking-daughter; but I have failed her in this lesson as I’m stuck with Mexico’s version of Coors Light: Tecate. But hey, we take whatever life throws our way. Or in our case, whatever we seek out from life. I mean, who just decides to take advantage of being allowed to work from home to zip down to Mexico for a month?! We do!

Mom at Baja Brewing

I purchased a growler of their Baja Razz and I’m proud to say it is officially gone. For those that don’t drink beer, a growler contains ~4 pints of beer and after the Farmers Market today, I cooled down with the last 2 pints.

Now how did we end up where the locals spend their Saturday… After dinner on Friday, we went to Maye’s house to drink “because the body knows tomorrow is Saturday.” And at the end, Bonnie invited us to tag along with her to the farmers market on Saturday. She raved about the “don’t panic, it’s all organic” Bread Man. Desperate to see more of this town than the Market, Downtown and our Complex, we jumped at the opportunity to just walk around a Farmers Market and also who wouldn’t love a Bread Man?!

Saturday 9am, Bonnie and her husband Ray (aka “Mr. Farmer’s Market”) picked us up and we were on our way. We arrive and have our temperatures taken before being allowed inside the outside farmers market. But hey, extra safety precautions are better than none. We picked up some colorful vegetables like tomatoes, green onions and perejil (parsley). And of course we stopped at the Bread Man’s stand to buy some of his baked goods. Ray knew so many people there that I called him “farmers market royalty.” I hope he doesn’t mind that I use this picture of him – it’s such a good scene set up and captures the essence of the day perfectly.

What farmer’s market wouldn’t be complete without The Crystal Lady and a Tarot Card Mystic? Mom picked up a new ojo bueno clear crystal in the shape of a ball and I bought a deck of affirmation cards to start each day with. We were really feeling good after visiting the Crystal Lady and decided to see how much the Psychic would do readings for. She told us it comes out to be about 100 pesos for 5 minutes. So about a $1 USD a minute. Mom has never gotten any kind of reading and I let her go first so she wouldn’t chicken out. I know her too well and she would say how she didn’t want Bonnie and Ray to be waiting for us or that she’d get a reading done back at home. Welcome to the club Mom!

Mom getting her 1st reading

Borrowing some pesos from mi mama, I received the messages the Universe was sending me through my tarot card reading. There were lots of swords and celestial images in my cards…. wonder what THAT’S all about. Perhaps the brujería magic was coming through.

Selfies with the psychic

Happy to have lived like a local this Saturday morning, Ray took us back home through a mini tour of this beautiful little town. I think I might be able to drive here after all. Watch out Mexico!
