Got you with some fun clickbait, right??! I’ll get to that story in a second because traveling with Mom and Pops has already been really funny and I’ve been in Loreto, B.C.S (that’s Baja California del Sur for those not in the know) less than 24 hours. This is going to be a great and much needed vacation!
My Lyft driver Darlene picked me up at 6:30a and I headed to CBX, the cross-border express which is a direct link to the Tijuana airport from San Diego. You walk across the pedestrian bridge and boom, you’re in Mexico. They changed up the CBX flow on me but I’ve done this travel within Mexico many times before so I knew what is expected of me. I’m not sure the other Americans hopping over the border were as savvy as me but I am one of a kind. At least that’s what I tell myself when I question how the heck I’m still single.
Despite the early morning and zero café, I was able to switch the Spanish on in my brain and navigate the airport with much ease. Maybe it was the crystals I carried with me that made things a bit easier – one was so magical that it set off some detector thing and the customs lady made me throw it away. Goodbye labradorite stone – you were my favorite and most expensive crystal in my collection but I am grateful they only confiscated one of my stones. The rest are safely with me and will be checked in my luggage when I head back to San Diego.

I thought my Mom was joking when she sent me a picture of my plane until I landed and saw that this was one of those no-runway, 1 baggage carrousel type of airports – the kind you find when you head off the beaten path. “Off the beaten path” is a much better description than how the lady sharing my shuttle to the hotel referred to Loreto (she called it “3rd world”). Side note, that kind of talk makes me so mad – Mexico gets a bad rep and yet she still spent money to come here. At least show some respect to this beautiful country – we’re visitors here.
I got to the Hotel La Mision around 1pm and we went to eat because I was starving. Typical hotel food – everyone knows you need to go where the locals are catered to, not Silly Americans who refer to their vacation places as “3rd world”. But food is food.
Afterwards, we took a group siesta in the air-conditioned room – Loreto is hot and humid (per the weather app, it’s currently 88 degrees with 45% humidity). When we woke up, we walked around the little town to check out our surroundings and book a 2-day land and sea tour. Here are some evening and night time pictures for your viewing pleasure.

We’re going to be sharing small spaces for the next 11 days so I am mindful in what I choose to wear to bed. Dad, on the other hand, forgot. I reminded him that should there be an emergency or terremoto (earthquake – you’re welcome Vanna) that I don’t need to be in therapy for the rest of my life seeing him in is underwear. Mom don’t care who sees her in what – or who sees her underwear as the men manning the military checkpoints saw them drying on top of her suitcase while they made their way down Baja in their car. I’m pretty sure they need therapy now too. Group discount??!
Today we got up and ate breakfast at the hotel – this time an American type breakfast was the sort of thing we were looking for. We wandered around the marina area before deciding that the pool was the only place we wanted to be at all day. We’re relaxing now, taking it easy because tomorrow is Day 1 of our tour. Is it the land or the sea tour…you’ll have to tune in tomorrow.
