Day 4: Skagway. No thanks to a glacial facial!

Still adjusting to the time change, and waking up at 6am to ‘sunlight’, we found ourselves in Skagway, Alaska. Our excursion report time was 9am so we had a leisurely breakfast in the dining room. We have all agreed that the buffet is for lunch only. No one likes to wake up and have to fight crowds for a darn bagel, especially pre-coffee. This is how far north we are!

Today’s excursion was a scenic hour-long boat ride, lunch and then canoeing to Davidson glacier. I’m writing this entry from the boat ride back, and as of this writing, we have not seen any whales or orcas. Guess we were too lucky yesterday. Darn!

The canoeing was fun only because we had a motor. The viewpoint to see the glacier was nice but according to our guide, it has a short shelf life as the glacier keeps melting away. The color of the frozen water is amazing. Speaking of frozen water, the guides told us that the water temperature of the river we went canoeing in is 36deg. And putting a finger in it, I can attest to that. Since it was so cold, there’s no way I was going to slather the silt/mud mixture from the melting glacier on my face. No thanks to a glacial facial!

Bald eagle chillin’ on the branches

It is freezing in Skagway. After our tour, we are headed back to the ship. I don’t need to see another small Alaskan port town. And I don’t need to freeze my butt off… all this weather change is messing with my sinuses. 2 days of cruising means no fun stories but next stop is Canada. I’m going international again!
