Well now I hate Semana Santa too!

Thursday started off pretty relaxing with a stroll on the beach before logging into work. We walked to the nearby surf school and were disappointed to see surf lessons at $85 USD for an hour and a half. That seems a bit expensive so we decided to skip it this trip. Sadly, we missed saying “goodbye” to my (now our) friends Bonnie and Ray before they went home for about a week. Coming back to my Tia’s condo on a regular basis means I have friends here now and my connection to Cabo is even stronger. Bonnie will be back when my mom is visiting so I see a few sunset happy hours in our future. I know it’s old news but below is a picture of us on the beach – David plays guitar and sings beautifully (ask me about the first time he played for me and I CRIED tears of JOY). And we’ve been enjoying a slower-paced vacation/working remote. Do we really have to go home??!

Finally Friday arrived; Which really means me working 1000X faster to get work over with so I can start my weekend. When Paul visited us last Sunday, he warned us that Semana Santa in Mexico is annoying as heck. I’d usually say “hell,” but it feels disrespectful when discussing Saint’s Week/Easter. So back to Semana Santa and why Paul says, “I hate Semana Santa.” This Holy Week coincides with Mexican spring break which means lots of Mexican people are visiting Cabo as well. And lots of police presence at the beach, on the roads and all over downtown. Crowds, crowds, crowds.

Sneaking away at 12p (after completing enough work, jajajaja) we headed to Playa Chileno for half-day of snorkeling and beach lounging. Apparently all the visiting Mexican Spring Breakers had the same idea since the parking lot was full and people were parking in all the red zones. David wanted to desperately park there as well but he forgets that we’re driving a rental car with the word TOURIST spray painted in colorado (red). We turned back around but decided to stop at Playa Costa Azul, which is walking distance from the condo. The parking lot was lively with music playing on the radio, kids dancing and food vendors selling from their cars. I love Mexico and how fun even the simplest things can be. Another heavy police presence but this beach was a lot less crowded so it felt safe.

Earlier in the week, someone left our vape pen in the Uber on our way back from the souvenir shopping excursion downtown. So that person went by himself downtown to secure a replacement – we’re borrowing supplies in Cabo. Having his own adventure, David wandered into a shop selling handmade masks made out of goat skin. And yes, they are as weird as you imagine. But he made a friend in the store owner, Joel, who promised him he could get us “anything you want.” Except a goat skin face mask…that thing is weird AF.

Friday date nite started off at Joel’s store so I could see these masks in person. I think all the praise Joel heaped upon me (“your Spanish is good,” “she’s pretty and smart”) started to make David uncomfortable so we left to wander around downtown.

For diner, I finally got to eat at Cafe Jardin Secreto and everything was really fresh and amazing. The best dish was an oyster taster appetizer that included 5 different flavored oysters – everything from a sweet fig and honey taste to a bold jalapeño vinaigrette. I wish I took a picture of the presentation. Maybe I can go back with mom when she arrives next weekend and we go out shopping downtown.

And maybe next time, I’ll book the condo for May and avoid Semana Santa altogether!
