“We’re roughing it, we only have 1 bathroom”

“It’s a right, up there.” As David makes the turn, I cry out, “uh, it was a left.” He only responds “Amy,” shaking his head. And then I wonder, can a road trip kill a marriage??! This is an epic road trip of firsts. First time road-tripping with our dog, Blue Ferrigno. First time road-tripping with the new car. First time road-tripping as a married woman.

We left San Diego headed for Fresno at 8am on Friday the 23rd. Psyched that we missed the dreaded LA traffic, we stop for celebratory-road-food Chick-fil-a breakfast sandwiches, because marriage is a compromise. I remain convinced the only fast food breakfast spot is McDonald’s & I will die on that arch.

Settling back onto the 5 north freeway, we’re driving along until we see smoke from the side of the freeway, just north of Santa Clarita. Uh oh, this can’t be good. California is well known for 2 things: movie stars & wildfires. The freeway traffic comes to a blistering stop & the GPS updates to add an additional 3 hours. I’m a very good passenger princess/navigator and immediately whip out my phone to google the sigalert. A few hours earlier, a semi truck got into an accident and landed on its side. The truck caused a wildfire (the Motor Fire) and the freeway was shut down to allow fire crews to do their magic.

One very illegal u-turn through a sandy embankment (I wasn’t driving!) and we headed south on the 5 to take back roads around the closure. 3 hours after our original arrival time, we reached stop #1, drum roll please, Fresno. I know, I know. Fresno. But it was a convenient stop for the night as we got used to being on the road. I’m really proud of Blue. He is stepping out of his comfort zone and getting used to being off-leash, safely. David & I are both working on disconnecting from work and taking time to enjoy all of the memories and moments we are making. Even if roughing it with only 1 bathroom.
