“I prefer humor.”

Monday, our first full day in Boise, was spent sleeping in, walking to a nearby neighborhood park and enjoying the amazing weather we found in Idaho. Hot, but not the sweltering heat. More like hot with a side of chill in the air – yes, fall is coming. You can smell it in the air and I’m glad we are still able to enjoy warmer weather. We met Chris for lunch at a dog-friendly restaurant and it was nice visiting with him. Later that day, we took the telescope up to Bogus Basin (crazy name, right??! We thought my cousin was pulling our leg when he suggested this location for stargazing). Winding up and down a mountain, we reached the parking lot for a ski resort that hasn’t started operations yet. The sunset was a variety of colors and very beautiful, but the best part of that evening was getting to hang out with Eli, Jenny, Chris and Pablo. Eli is Chris’ eight-year old son who is extremely bright and inquisitive. And very talkative. When I asked him what his favorite movie genre is, he replied, “I prefer humor.” I knew he and David would get along just fine. Since it was a school night, we called it a stargazing success and headed back down the mounting where Chris’ car was met with a black bear running across the road. We didn’t get to see it but I’m just glad David navigated us down the mountain safely to “smile, you live another day!”

On Tuesday, we headed out of Boise for an hour day-trip to Idaho City which is a cute old mining town with old timey feels. The drive up was easy and followed along a creek. I really love that there is so much water around Idaho. Creeks and rivers, lakes, water, water, water. After lunch in Idaho City, I drove us back to town so David could take a nap. At least a sleeping David is less talkative than an awake David as I need focus to navigate curvy mountain roads. But we survived and live to smile. This trip has been so much fun and much needed detox from work and life’s stress. The open road is hopeful. Even if your husband’s driving scares you!

After Idaho City, we met Chris and Eli at a park to go floating down the Boise River. I had done this last time I visited (exactly 5 years ago in August 2019) and really enjoyed how relaxing just floating can be. As we travel these western states, David and I have really loved being near water and all of the various water activities that come with it. I would like to find a place that is tucked away and has water nearby – a lake, a river, a creek, I’ll take anything. Floating was even better with good company. Oh the memories we’re making! My heart is happy.

Like I mentioned before, Eli is really smart. But very humble and you can tell just an all around good kid. He got a little sad when we told him that we were leaving the next day – I think he liked us. So we invited Our Stargazing Crew over to our place for pizza and a jam session. We’ll definitely try to come back sooner to visit with this awesome family of mine.
