Red Rocks?! More like No rock

It’s never too late to cross off an item from my 2024 Bucket List. Better late than never they say. The two items that would have been checked off with a weekend trip to Morrison, Colorado include:

  • Seeing a 90s band (Sublime❤️🤘🏽)
  • Attending a concert out of town (Red Rocks Amphitheater 🏔️)

Now you’re thinking, right on! Amy is so cool going to concerts out of town and I would like to tell you that you’re right. Red Rocks has been on David’s concert venue bucket list and he’s made it to Morrison once before, without having been to a show.

Yay Music Man Dave. Or maybe not yay since he may be bad luck; the show is RESCHEDULED to Monday the 21st because of snow & we can’t attend. To be fair, we met a girl while walking around town who has tried unsuccessfully to see a concert at Red Rocks 4 times now (yes, it is cold) so she might be more of the reason for crappy luck. Either way, we adapted.

First stop for breakfast at Blackbird Cafe followed by a trip to the local pot store for some Colorado cannabis. On the way there, David spotted a crystal shop & we stopped. Really glad we visited with Joe from Bear Creek Crystals. He was really cool to chat with and gave us some suggestions for where to eat and have a good time despite the concert cancellation.

After a stop with the Green Man, we headed to Duluth Trading Company in search of thermals and boots. The options in sunny San Diego are few and far between during Spring. Or anytime of the year really. An afternoon of lunching and shopping local vendors in all these cute little mountain towns ensued. Shout out to Moxie Poppy’s store owner who played Sublime music for us and some other Sad Sublime Fans, commiserating over our shared bond of not getting to see Sublime perform live. Don’t worry, we’re already looking for their next concert somewhere warm.

Our last stop was at Creekside Winery where things went from cool friendly vibes to silent suspicious stares from the people running the winery. Bill, the very elderly owner, greeted us outside explaining their kitchen was closed. “That’s OK, we just want to purchase a bottle of wine for a cozy night in,” we said. “Well come right in,” he says. He starts pouring, asking no questions about what we like or were interested in purchasing. He just wanted to take care of us. Pour after pour is how he showed kindness.

We were buzzing and enjoying the hospitality and reprieve from the snow until the 2 people much younger than Old Bill started giving us the “time to leave look.” I guess they thought we were there to take advantage of an old guy but we always intended to purchase wine. In fact, we purchased 2 bottles and agreed that it was sad Bill just wanted to take care of some out of town guests. Which is funny because as we were leaving, we mentioned we were from San Diego and got to chatting with a girl and her friends (more members of the Sad Sublime Fanclub) who helped remind us how cool we are.

Riding the good vibe waves and Rocky Mountain high, we FaceTimed with the VA Bennetts & got bossed around by Waverly (5 years old) to throw snowballs at Opa. Despite not seeing Sublime, we are still lucky to spend time adventuring around and finding our sublime together.
