Let’s talk about being extremely sick in a foreign country…

Yesterday started off like every other day I’ve been hanging out here at the resort. I got up late, showered, put on a bathing suit because I haven’t actually been in the water yet and head to the restaurant for lunch. I’ve been having a larger lunch at the restaurant and then make a sandwich for myself in the evenings. And every day I go to the restaurant, I tell myself I’m going to get a hamburger because how hard is it to mess that up?! The food hasn’t been great over the past 4 days but yesterday I was convinced my problem was that I didn’t go with my gut instinct and order the hamburger. I even ask them to prepare it really well done because I’m not taking any chances. And I start eating but immediately I’m confronted with the world’s smallest stomach. It’s as if I had a tummy tuck overnight. This resort is fancy, but not that fancy. And since I’ve been stressing about finances the past few days (don’t worry, I have a backup plan to not become destitute), I kept forcing myself to eat as much as that $15 USD burger as possible. I left the restaurant and was pretty full but still relishing that my choices in life these days are: what to eat for lunch and do I go to my private beach or private pool? The resort is dead this week.

The sun never made it out so I headed back to my apartment. And I’m noticing that my stomach is fully distended. Like I’m having a hamburger baby and it looks like I should pick out a name pretty quickly here. And the bloating just stays put. I’m in serious discomfort but not enough yet to sound the alarms. And then I get a relatively sharp, stop your breath kind of pain in my right side sometime yesterday evening. You can tell I’m beginning to worry as my search history shows terms like “appendicitis symptoms, where is the appendix located, can you get a UTI from riding a bike.” The sharp pain (scale of 1-10, about a 7.25) only comes on when I move around. So I lay as still as I can on my bed and start mentally recapping my symptoms and other pertinent details in case I need to head to urgent care/hospital. I’m trying to remain calm but I do find the information in the guest handbook about urgent care and after hours emergencies at the resort. Every time I thought I was falling asleep, my leg would kick out and I’d check to make sure I’m still alive and breathing. I made a promise to myself that if the RIGHT side pain (yes, that’s where your appendix is), continued, at 7am, I’d go to urgent care, somehow, someway because it’s not like I have a car. The resort would probably have to take me there via golf cart and as much “fun” as that would be (as well as a memorable blog story), I really didn’t want to have to go.

This is me after a very restless night 😦

My mom is a retired nurse…luckily for me (and because she insisted), I’ve traveled the world with cipro (an antibiotic) for just these instances. She had a doctor’s appointment and asked them if I should begin the cipro based on the details I gave her. They said “yes” and so I did. And I think it helped immediately. Well, I felt a little tingly as I laid motionless in my bed praying the pain went away. I’m happy to report that the “every time I move” pain in my right side no longer occurs. I still feel a little weak and am taking it suuuuuuuper easy. I was in so much pain that I actually cried out for the Universe to send me my spirit animals (the iguanas) and that I wouldn’t be grossed out by them anymore. And this MONSTER appeared at my doorstep today:

Also, the resort has been really helpful to me in my hours of need. The restaurant breakfast chef made me a broth soup because the only way I could get soup is to ride 3.5 miles into town and if you remembered my Google history, I think that bike ride is cursed. Also, the resort goes above and beyond in customer service. Despite having the “privacy please” doorknob sign, they will still knock on my door and ask me if I need housekeeping for the day. I didn’t know how I’d feel or if I’d be sleeping throughout the day so I had to leave them a note. The restaurant worker who brought me my soup made sure the sign stayed up and said she hoped I felt better. It was absolutely sunny and hot today and I spent it recovering indoors. There’s always tomorrow!
