We’re only a few days into our month-long stay in Mexico and there are some important discoveries I’ve made so far. In no particular order:
- Easter is a whole week called Semana Santa. It culminates in family coming together and Easter egg hunts for los ninos on Easter Sunday.
- Everything is flavored with chile, even if it explicitly is not shown in the picture on the front of the package. So bring your own nacho cheese Doritos unless you fancy the taste of cheese and jalapeño. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy some spice every now and then, but not when I’m tricked into enjoying it. Just BYOD (bring your own Doritos).
- Coca cola tastes soooooo much better here. I’m convinced it’s actually closer to the original recipe containing cocaine. It’s that good.
- Mexico is not a scary place. Yes, there are scary people in all places of the world and Mexico (unfortunately) gets a really bad rap. But I love Mexico! People are so kind everywhere and even when I struggle with the right words, they don’t make me feel bad. Except my mom, when she laughed when I asked what “choriarte” meant. I thought I knew what it meant but why would it be the name of a restaurant??!

Friday night my “Tia” Maye took Mom and I driving around town and we ended up in the historical town center – San Jose del Cabo is really just a small little town, very different than the Cabo or Los Cabos that everyone is familiar with. Downtown reminded me of a lot of Latin city centers – colorful, authentic, bustling and magical. Here’s some video of us walking to go eat at Baja Brewing because if you follow my travels, you know I make friends over beer. It’s one of the great unifiers in the world. Can’t we all just get along and share a pint or 10?!

Saturday, we were the most flojas ever! But we have a whole month to explore and if I end up buying a condo here (new mid-life crisis goal), then I’ll have a lot more time to explore and learn to drive here. My “cousin” Paul says I just need common sense – he clearly hasn’t spent a lot of time with “Wrong Way Amy” which is how my Mom refers to my sense (or lack thereof) of direction. I’ve been known to walk BLOCKS in the wrong direction all over the world based on gut feelings. I don’t think Mexico wants me driving here. Hahaha.
Today, Easter Sunday, we went to a restaurant with Maye because Paul, his wife and daughter would be there painting Easter eggs. The daughter is the one who “owns” the condo we’re renting (aka “my family spirit animal”) and she was dressed up as a lady bug. Fun fact [aka, Amy learning shit]: Her name is Catalina (she really is adorable) and ladybug in Spanish is “Catarina.” It’s almost like her parents planned this. As someone who is looking forward to a regular Halloween this year, this girl for sure is my spirit animal! I can’t wait to dress up again!

And finally (because I know everyone will be green with envy) here’s today’s sunset color show in the sky. It’s OK to be jealous. I would totally be if I wasn’t living this amazing life!

Oh Miss Amy, you make my soul happy 😍
