Auf Wiedersehen Berlin…Hello another German speaking country

Yesterday marked the 10th and 11th plane rides I’ve taken on this journey. I think that’s probably even more than some people may have taken in a lifetime. I’m a self-certified pro in plane travel and still quite a novice when it comes to trains. Even though I’ve never had any real issues on the train. Speaking of trips, I don’t think the Universe likes that I leave home. Something usually happens when I travel abroad. Allow me to highlight just a few terrible things that have happened to me:

  • 2015: My cell died in Brazil. It got a humidity bubble and started sending weird text messages like it was possessed. That was early on in my travels so I’m glad Danielle was with me because we used her work phone a lot. I don’t think I’m supposed to broadcast that so let’s leave it between ourselves.
    • Also in 2015, the night before I leave for South America, a woman crashes into my parked car and totals it. I left the country with no vehicle and returned with only 3 days to find another before car insurance stopped paying for a rental. Did I mention that I also didn’t have a cell phone? I felt 16 years old again with my Dad driving me around and letting me borrow his phone to make calls.
2016: My refrigerator goes out early on during a 3-week jaunt to Spain and Portugal. And yes I just said 3 weeks is a jaunt…compared to 3 months, that was kids’ stuff. My poor parents were first to get to my condo and first to clean up the biohazard mess.
2018: My a/c went down in my condo while I was gone and my Mom had to get a friend to drive down to San Diego to fix it for me. Meanwhile, I’m bragging to all the Europeans that I have central a/c. I think the Universe is just being spiteful on this one.

    • Today, I dropped my cell phone into the toilet. I quickly pulled it out (and for some odd reason the toilet water is really low in Austria. And yes, I just dropped that I was in Salzburg, Austria but forcing you to read everything before that) and wiped it off. And it seemed fine, nothing weird until I started using it and the screen went pitch black. Well almost pitch black, I could kind of make out some apps.
  • So here I am, in another country (Austria makes #21) and staying in an AirBnB apartment that doesn’t have WiFi. And I’m thinking, what am I supposed to do? There aren’t even city maps in the apartment. I went to a coffee shop down the street but no one at the place knew the WiFi password. I was proud of myself for not crying in front of the people working there but as soon as I got out, I wept. Thinking, how am I supposed to navigate this city without GPS and especially without a map. One of the coffee shop workers told me how to get into town (which is really easy but quite a trek) so I went into town. Found a really fancy hotel and gave them my sob story without the sobs – and they gave me a map in German. At this point, anything would do. I decided I didn’t want to do much venturing as I don’t trust myself to not make it back to my apartment without issue. Imagine being stuck without a way to navigate and not speak the language.
  • From what I could see today, after my mini meltdown, Salzburg is pretty cute. Reminds me most other cities I’ve seen on this trip but nevertheless, it will be different in it’s own unique way.
  • The Mozart bridge is pretty nice too and it’s a good landmark for someone without navigation.
  • Also, I haven’t seen a life size cutout of Mozart on this trip yet, so Salzburg has that going for it
  • I’m now back towards my apartment at one of my other landmarks, the BierGarden. I’m totally butchering the name but they have WiFi and serve beer. So I should have just booked to stay here instead of the apartment up the street. Time to make some Netflix shows available offline and head back to my apartment to rest.
